THE House Independent Minority group, led by Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, vowed to prod the House leadership to look into important issues besetting the country when Congress opens its Second Regular Session.
According to Romualdez, the group will ask Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. to conduct an investigation into the pork barrel scam in which many House members have been implicated.
Romualdez likewise said the group wants to scrutinize the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). Suits have been filed at the Supreme Court questioning the DAP’s constitutionality and legality.
“There is a need to have a thorough and no-nonsense probe into equally vital issues like the DAP funds,” Romualdez said.
Aside from the DAP, the bloc also wanted to investigate the smuggling, the multi-million overpricing in rice importation and other issues.
Romualdez has expressed disappointment over the continued refusal of the House leaders to look into these fund scams.
“That’s why when the House starts its second regular session, we in the bloc will go all-out in pursuing these issues and anything else of similar national importance that will crop in the coming days,” Romualdez said.
“In the process, we will do everything we can to start our own bills moving in the legislative process,” he added.
Romualdez has called on the High Court to immediately decide on the constitutionality of DAP without fear or favor.
“I am expecting them to decide without fear and favor and exercise their full independence in making a ruling on DAP which is similar to the pork barrel funds that Congress scrapped last year after the magistrates declared it unconstitutional,” he added.Jester Manalastas
