House Independent Minority leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. and Parañaque Rep. Gus Tambunting rejected the proposal of Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice to allow President Aquino to seek re-election in 2016. Erice is set to file a resolution seeking to amend the political provisions of the decade-old Constitution by allowing the President to seek another term in order to continue the reforms in government. According to Romualdez, there is no assurance if the people will accept or be open to the idea of Charter change especially on a political issue. “The proposal is self-serving and the people will vehemently oppose such move. Should the President support the call for his second term, it means he disregarded his own principle because of the desire to stay in power,” Romualdez said. On the other hand, Belmonte said, there is no assurance Erice’s proposal will get the support of the members of the House of Representatives. Likewise, Belmonte said, from the previous statement of President Aquino it seems that he is not interested in another term. “I don’t think the President will allow it. The people would not accept that. Besides it is not the style of PNoy,” Belmonte said. Tambunting, a member of United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), said Erice’s proposal will elicit more questions from different sectors. “It is ill-advised. (Ex) Sen. (Ninoy) Aquino and (former-President) Cory (Aquino), if still alive, would have been the first to denounce the suggestion,” Tambunting said. Earlier, Erice, a member of the Liberal Party said that he will first get the sentiments of his constituents by gathering signatures. “May pagkakataon ngayon para matuloy ang reforms. Bihira lang dumarating ito, mayroon tayong Pangulo na matino, may Pangulo tayo na walang ibang passion kung paano ipagpapatuloy ang nasimulan ng kanyang mga magulang na ikinokonsidera ng mga bayani,” Erice stressed. Abakada party-list Rep. Jonathan de la Cruz and Ilocos Norte Rep.Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas also rejected the proposal.

LAWMAKERS from the opposition and the administration objected to the proposed second term for President Benigno Aquino.
Bihira lang dumarating ito, mayroon tayong Pangulo na matino, may Pangulo tayo na walang ibang
passion kung paano ipagpapatuloy ang nasimulan ng kanyang mga magulang na ikinokonsidera ng mga bayani,” Erice stressed.
Abakada party-list Rep. Jonathan de la Cruz and Ilocos Norte Rep.Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas also rejected the proposal.
