CONGRESSIONAL COMMENDATION IN ORDER FOR 40 PINOY PEACEKEEPERS •	September 22, 2014 •	Written by Ryan Ponce Pacpaco •	Published in Nation MORE lawmakers have commended the bravery of 40-man Filipino peacekeeping troops who escape safely last month after battling the heavily armed Syrian rebels while being stationed at their Rwihana encampment in the Golan Heights. House independent bloc leader and Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone urged the House leadership to act for the congressional commendation of Filipino soldiers for their gallant stand in fighting Syrian rebels who tried to overrun their United Nations (UN) military camp on the Golan Heights. “Our peacekeeping troops deserve commendation for the bravery, courage and professionalism they displayed during the attack despite being outnumbered by the heavily armed Syrian rebels. Their refusal to surrender in carrying their mandate is very laudable,” Romualdez stressed. “They demonstrated the military’s core values of courage and commitment of the country for showing highest levels of professionalism and competence. Surely, they would be admired by their peers worldwide,” Romualdez pointed out. Evardone filed House Resolution (HR) No. 1517 to commend the “unparalleled valor and firm commitment” of the Filipino soldiers. “In defense of peace and security in the area, the said Filipino troops, trapped and outnumbered, held their ground for seven hours before maneuvering an escape under cover of darkness through chilly hills,” said Evardone. “These Filipino soldiers’ exemplary courage and bravery for the sake of peace and security in the Golan Heights and the Middle East deserve commendation,” said Evardone. “The brave and unyielding members of our Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) deployed to the Golan Heights region are well-trained not only in ensuring the peace and security but also in fighting for it,” Evardone added. The country has supported UN Security Council Resolution No. 350 (1974) which created the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) Mission to maintain the ceasefire between Israeli and Syrian forces, and supervise their disengagement as well as the areas of separation and limitation in the Israeli-occupied Syrian territory of Golan Heights. “The Philippines remains steadfast in its commitment to help ensure international peace and security and recognizes the UN Security Council, its powers and functions, as well as the mechanisms for the pacific settlement of disputes between states,” Evardone’s resolution said. Earlier, Muntinlupa City Rep. Rodolfo Biazon, chairs the House committee on national defense and security; and MAGDALO party-list Rep. Francisco Ashley Acedillo to commend the gallantry of the Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights
